Hatem Bamehriz

Chief of Party

Hatem Bamehriz is Chief of Party for Democracy International in South Sudan. He has over 20 years of professional experience in international democracy development. Most recently, he supported political reforms and transition initiatives in his home country of Yemen as Country Director and Senior Advisor-Middle East/North Africa (MENA) for Development Transformations. In this capacity, he provided direct consultations with the Offices of the President and Prime Minister in Yemen. Previously, Mr. Bamehriz served as a Country Director for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan, as well as Deputy Country Director in Yemen. He managed NDI’s large political parties program in Afghanistan and assisted the organization open its offices in Somalia and Sudan. He has broad experience working within tribal political frameworks in transitioning environments.

Mr. Bamehriz has trained political parties, parliamentarians, election officials, civil society activists, and media members across MENA, South Asia, and East Africa. As a regional expert, he has published several articles in Arabic on political and democratic development in the Middle East and has provided related commentary and analysis for international media outlets. He has additionally provided briefings to U.S. Congressional delegations and representatives from the U.S. Department of State and USAID.

Mr. Bamehriz holds an M.B.A. in Marketing and a B.S. from the University of Pune in India. In addition to English, he speaks Arabic, Hindi, and Urdu.
