Dan Murphy
Daniel Murphy is Director of Elections and Political Processes at Democracy International. Mr. Murphy is an electoral expert specializing in issues related to electoral administration, pollworker training, pollworker recruitment, election law compliance, polling place accessibility, voter education, public relations and project management. He was previously Democracy International’s Chief of Party in Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013.
A graduate of the American University in Washington, D.C. with a B.A. in International Studies, he began his career in elections in 1999 as Executive Assistant to the President of the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. After leaving IFES, he served as an Election Programs Coordinator for the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder/County Clerk, the largest election jurisdiction in the United States. He then worked as Special Assistant to the Vice Chairman at the then newly-formed United States Election Assistance Commission. In 2005, Mr. Murphy left the EAC to start his own consulting business. He has been instrumental in the redesign of pollworker training programs in Cook County, Illinois, the City of Long Beach, California and Franklin County, Ohio. He served as the manager of the State Hosted Systems program of the Overseas Vote Foundation, an organization committed to serving the needs of military and overseas voters. During the 2008 election cycle, he held the post of Acting Public Information Officer for the District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics.
In his overseas work, he served as an embedded technical advisor for the Electoral Complaints Commission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan during the Presidential Election of 2009 and the Parliamentary Election of 2010. He was the Northern Voting Coordinator for the Kosovo Assembly elections in 2010 and 2011. In 2011 he functioned as a technical advisor to the Guyana Government Enhancement Project helping to focus voter education efforts in advance of the 2011 elections and served as a member of the Haiti 2011 United Nations Development Program Post Election Needs Review/Planning Mission Joint International Team.
